Ways to Stay Warm this Winter

Our first response to cold weather is to increase the thermostat. However, super-heating is not the only means to keeping warm during winter. Follow through with these simple but effective methods to keeping you and your Bangor home warm throughout

Dress in Layers

Using layers of clothing correctly is the key to fighting off the cold. You should take note of this, especially when your day is made up of moving from indoors to outdoors. To keep yourself warm but not overheated while indoors, start with a light layer of wicking fabric first. Then, add layers until you are warm and comfortable. Go for shirts, sweaters, jackets, and coats if you want a comfy top. For your bottom half, something like flannel-lined pants will keep you warm, as well! And don’t forget a hat, scarf, and socks! Make sure that your head, neck, and feet are warm, so that the rest of your body will follow, becoming warmer and more comfortable.

Winterize Your Home

Check for any chilly blasts of air in your home; these might be coming from the common areas where drafts and air leaks occur — if so, you might need to check and then seal these areas. Several air leaks come from gaps around doors and windows. Try adding some caulking around the frame or replace the weather-stripping around the door frame. Both items can be very beneficial for you. If a draft creeps in beneath your doors, try blocking the entrance with rolled towel or blanket. Thermal curtains, soft rugs, and other fabrics can also help alleviate cold spots and keep your home warmer.

Furnace Maintenance

If it’s been a while since your furnace had a check-up, you might want to schedule a professional to come and look at it. Your household needs to be kept in shape. In the same manner, your furnace needs regular maintenance to keep it running efficiently. As time passes, your heating system will become worn down and will have difficulty keeping a consistent temperature. But, with regular furnace maintenance, you can keep your system running efficiently by changing filters regularly. This will even bring down your energy costs.

Use a Humidifier

If your area’s winter months are normally cold and dry, including a humidifier in your home can help you stay warm while inside. Dry air generally feels much colder than air with humidity. Cold, dry air also tends to leave your skin and hair feeling rough and dehydrated. A humidifier will help keep moisture in your air. A whole-house humidifier is nice, but it’s not a must. Simply getting a low-cost humidifier for frequently used rooms or even boiling a pot of water on the stove can help make the air in your home feel warmer and more comfortable.

Stay Active

Want to get warmed up? Move around! It’s natural for us to want to tuck ourselves under blankets when it’s cold. However, that isn’t the best way to stay warm. If you want to stay warm, keep your body active. In so doing, you’re increasing your body’s temperature. Through exercise, you can keep your body warm, build muscle, and improve blood flow. But even activities like cleaning, playing an interactive game, or other types of movement can do the trick. Merge an active lifestyle into your daily routine so that you can keep yourself warm despite the harsh cold of the winter season.
